Marley sat alone at his desk, head leaned onto his arm, bored and loathing life, as usual. A messenger with an odd pointed Nuavian hat walked into the hall, his face red from the amount of effort it had taken him to reach the hall, being as overweight and out of shape as he was. He tottered over to Marley's desk, placing a scroll on it.
"This is for you, sir," he said in a very squeaky voice that Marley found quite amusing. He displayed this by laughing out loud and pointing at him. "What is it? The receipt from the restaurant you just emptied?" Marley cackled and poked him in his tubbiness, and rolled the scroll open. The overweight Nuavian messenger frowned and stepped away sadly. "Good one, Marley," the clerk congratulated himself as he looked the assignment over. He scribbled something at the bottom with his quill and stepped to the board beside his desk to post it.
Scribbled upon the parchment in sharp, roug strokes were the words:
"'Help With Shoplifters Needed:
Hello recently my business has been plagued with shop lifters. This is quite affecting my profits and I don't know what else to do. I'm situated in Commonsborough, Endsburgh. Specifically The Business Section. My name is Ililsasa Aven Duisath and my business' name is Commonsborough Quality Clothes. Thank you.'
Two to three man job. Sign names of those making the call at bottom and turn in to Marley Banxome at his desk."

Tavali bounded up to the assingment board for the 3rd time that day. Finally something was posted! She'd been itching for assignment for days now. She read the requirements and groaned. Tavali prayed that she'd get good partners. In fact she was better off if she went and found someone she worked well with. Half tempted to steal the posting before anyone else saw it she restrained herself reasoning that everyone deserved to see it if they wanted to. Instead she signed with a flourish and half ran half skipped to find a team as quick as possible.

Jon strode down the corridor to Marley's domain, recounting the stones. This was yet another daily trip to the North Wing and had counted each rock that reminded him of the rocks in the mountain he was born in. As he approached the door to the office, he recognized a fellow Nuavian leaving it. She greeted him briskly... Obviously had somewhere to go. An assignment? He wondered and hoped. "Aquilus." Jon didn't like being called his first name, and made this painfully clear to everybody. "Tavali. Please. It's Jon." He turned and stopped her with his right hand, being sure to brush even a square millimeter of skin, focusing some warmth into the core of his gauntlet, Reading the past few minutes of her timeline. Ah, yes. Somewhere to go indeed. She's beaten me to it! A glint of excitement shone in his eye, and she caught it in the corner of her own as she turned to face him. Jon always enjoyed teasing the new recruits, and was always glad to hear the insights of the admiral, but a new mission was something Jon had been dying to see for days, even if it was to stop a few petty thieves in Endsburgh. The past two years of his life had grown on him, and he lived each day in anticipation of something new to do. "Well, you've obviously just Read me, Aquilus." He rolled his eyes with a half-smile. "No need for niceties, then? I'm in." He glanced and nonchalantly pointed his palm into the office of the Endsburghian, firing two fine blasts of very hot light energy at the sheet, a trick he'd been practicing waiting for a sheet to do it to. He grinned as the slight man yelped and cursed. He half hoped his "signature" would have scorched into the desk as well, but he also didn't particularly want to pay for it to be repaired. Tavali shook her head and started walking away. Jon followed, wondering if another would join the team.

"You know you're not supposed to be damaging the property Jon." Tavali said as she walked away. Out of everybody to sign up he wasn't the worst it could be. She knew she should tell Marley they were ready to go instead of possible ending up with a bad third member. "Jon please tell the lovely Marley we're ready to be debriefed so we can leave. I'm going stir crazy" Just to continue being childish she ran off leaving Jon to deal with whatever Marley was going to do to him for zapping the paper. She planned to return in ten or so minutes, just enough time for it to blow over.

Jon flushed as the Nuavian Doorwoman left him to be dealt with by Marley, who was sitting at his desk, tapping his fingers and as red as the embers that had very recently been extinguished in his desk. "Hello, Marley, m'boy," Jon said, affecting a very stodgy, very exaggerated 'Burgh accent, "We're quite nearly ready for a debriefing, once young Tavali returns. She may be bringing another Doorman to join us, fair warning." Though Jon knew the man hated Doormen, and would in other circumstances be visibly upset at the news, he didn't react. Jon braced himself to get his own personal debriefing that would leave his eardrums as singed as the paper he'd "signed" but a minute earlier.

"I'm afraid I don't know much about the situation, as I've far more important matters to tend to here. This is all the information I had, and you've taken care of that," Marley tapped the charred poster with a stiff finger. "So you're on your own for this one." He snickered and pulled down the metal cover to his window, retreating back into his office.

Jon sighed heavily. The paper WOULD have been just fine if you'd have gotten to it just after I hit it, old man. He grinned as an idea came to his head. He grabbed a leaflet from the stack next to the metal divider, a piece of inscribing alloy from the labeled cup, and channeled some stored light energy into his gauntlet core. It went from black to a pale silver as the core absorbed ambient light. He then Read the charred paper's past and transcribed the important details onto the fresh leaflet. Proud of himself, and a little glad Marley hadn't retaliated more harshly, he left the room to find Tavali.
